Girls Night In…

Girls night

I have a lot of crafty, cool, girlfriends that are always inspiring me to get my craft on!

So, a few weeks back I happened to run into a blog called Little Miss Momma that has a really sweet pom-pom necklace tutorial. First I tested the water and made my own. I thought it came out really great and so did the few strangers that complimented me when I wore it. It seemed like it would be a perfect project to get the girls together for a girls night in!

A few glasses of wine, homemade pumpkin cannolis, a whole lot of craftiness, and by the end of the night we all had pretty necklaces of our own.

Needless to say, I adore my crafty friends and can’t wait for our next DIY!

Her First Day…

Today was Sophia’s first day of preschool and she was giddy!

It was funny because as we drove the whole quarter-mile there, she told me all the things she wanted to tell her teachers about and all the fun she was going to have. Once we got into her classroom she got quiet, held my hand tight, and hid behind my legs!

After just a few minutes though she was off playing. She says she loves school and can’t wait to go back…phew!

Our first decade…

It’s really been something like 17 years. Crazy, right? I’m sure everyone who marries their high-school sweetheart says the same thing. But honestly, I had no idea that a teenage relationship that began when I was 15 years old would shape my life in such a defining way. After dating each other throughout high school and college we were married on June 9, 2001.

I know everyone says that their wedding and reception was the best, but ours really was! A sunny warm day getting married outside at The Senator’s Mansion’s garden put everyone in a party kind of mood. We ate, drank, and danced the night away. All the little details came together and it was an experience I will always remember to be perfect!

Now, ten years after saying “I Do”, living in three different states, buying our first home, and best of all creating a family of four; we are celebrating our ten year anniversary!

Years ago we said that we’d like to take a big trip every decade and renew our vows. For our first decade we decided to go to the British Virgin Islands and stay at a five star boutique resort named Little Dixe Bay. Let me just say, “WOW”!

Hello…Anyone There?

Color Wheel Stick Umbrella, $40

My hat goes off to all the mom bloggers that can constantly keep the ball rollin’ and find the time to blog about it! Once our summer got into full swing I felt like I had two choices – get out and enjoy our summer fun or plant the kids in front of tv while I blog about the things we should be doing. For those of you who check in regularly, you know I chose to take a brief hiatus and soak up the sun.

Sophia and Ian are growing so fast. Next week will be sophia’s first week of preschool. She’s really excited to go but I secretly feel sad about it. I’m sure most momma’s feel that way too and it will be great for Ian and me to have some alone time, I just can’t help but feel like it’s all going so fast.

Well anyways, the next few posts are going to be rewinds of some fun summer times. Thanks for understanding my hiatus and I’ll try to be a more consistent blogger this fall!

Oh, and I have a very cool diy idea that I’m going to post this week, so come on back!

I’ve written and rewritten this post several times.

I keep starting by recounting the dramatic story of Sophia being admitted to Children’s Hospital for several days because of an abscess on her neck. The story is long as I go over all the details, the twist and turns, the cancelled surgery literally at the eleventh hour. But as I type, it seems like the story is going in the wrong direction. I have this lingering feeling that seems to be saying that by recounting it all and expressing my fear, it ends up overshadowing the awesomeness of the experience.

We prayed and prayed and prayed. We reached out to everyone we knew to pray for Sophia too. We weren’t seeing any improvement but had an unusual peace about it. We signed all the surgery paperwork. We discussed avoiding her vocal cords and major arteries and how their wouldn’t be enough skin to close the incision so it would need to remain open. We prepared for surgery to happen at 1:50pm.

At 10:00am the surgery was cancelled! The abscess had actually shrunk by one centimeter, the fever had broken, the medicine was working and we were being sent home! Our prayers were answered. I can’t help but feel excited to think that this is just the beginning of Sophia’s personal experience with God.

Happy Father’s Day…

the coolest dad I know

Dear Dad,

Happy Father’s day! You are the best dad and grandpa that a kid could ever have! You are fun, silly, loving, kind, caring and considerate. I have always felt incredibly safe and accepted by you. I’m not sure what it is (maybe your big muscles as I was growing up…yup, my dad was Mr. New York State) but no matter where we were or what we were up to, if I was around you I knew that you’d take care of everything!

Thank you for instilling the idea of “family first”. As an adult I’ve seen glimpses into other families lives, and in most cases we seem to be tighter knit. I’m convinced that this is because of our close upbringing and your leadership.

Thank you for teaching me a good work ethic and how to get away with a good prank too! I love your silly side, like when you are a shaving cream monster or when you rig the sink sprayer to soak whoever turns the faucet on next! I also love how when you set your mind to something, there’s no stopping you. You have shown me how to never quit, be true to myself, and live my life according to God’s will.

Thank you for letting me feel so secure as I was growing up. I know you are always there for me and that has allowed me to take more risks and feel so much confidence in myself. I love you so much and am incredibly blessed to have you as my dad.

I love you,
Bunk

I realize I am not the most consistent blogger out there anyway, but this time I have a very good excuse…..

I’m Here…

Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda BVI

Amazing, Right? Lovey and I are celebrating our TEN YEAR anniversary! I miss the kiddos badly but we really needed this trip to reconnect and be uninterupted. I’m just starting to remember how nice it is to actually sit down and eat my own meal, not rush to take a shower or have a little person at my feet when I’m om the potty! Did I take that too far??? It’s the island breeze and warm sun getting to me! Anyways, I’ll post again when we get back home. Miss everyone and if you happen to see my kiddos with grandma and grandpa, plant a bunch of kisses on them for me!

Thinking fruit…

With our 90 degree weather and high humidity, the kiddos have been spotted double fisted lately with sippy cups in hand. So, I’ve been inspired to think of another option instead of sugary juice.

Say hello to my family’s new drink of choice

Fruit Infused Water

So far our favorites have been cantaloupe & honeydew and strawberry & kiwi. All of these fruits are readily available to us during the summer and are so fresh! It is delicious the first day but even better the second day. My next attempt will be cucumber water…hmm…I wonder what other veggies I can get away with!

Summer Bucket List…

As our weather heats up my mind starts to go in over-drive thinking of all the fun things I want our family to do. We seem to be the kind of people that without an advance plan, we sit around wondering what we should be doing. Then at the end of the night, the could have/should have ideas flood my head. So, here is a list of our summer to-do plans (leaving room for a lot of flexibility, of course):

Strawberry picking & jam making
A visit to a working farm
Picnic in the park
Kite flying
Tie dye shirt making
Host a family barbecue
Make homemade ice-cream
Participate in a 5k
Get a mani/pedi with Sophia
Make Sophia a pillowcase dress
Make Ian a superhero cape
Pool, pool, and more pool

If you can’t tell, I love summer! The kind of love that makes me want to wear bubble gum pink nail polish and a perfect denim skirt every single day. I love the extra daylight hours, gardening in the backyard, dinners on the deck, swinging on the porch swing, and walking to ice cream. So, on that note, welcome summer…I’ve been waiting for you!
